Isekai Mugen Soul Online Devlog #3: Playtest Feedback, Combat Retaliation & Homestead Polish
Iterating on real player feedback: fixing monster counter-attacks, tuning natural walk gait vs high-speed dash, physicalizing building collision, and streamlining the farming loop.
Welcome to Devlog #3 of Isekai Mugen Soul - Online (異世界無限ソウルズ)!
Nothing beats putting a build into player hands on real hardware. Over the past 24 hours, our first round of live Mac laptop playtesting delivered invaluable feedback. Here is an honest breakdown of the issues discovered, how we tuned locomotion and combat, and the improvements now running live.
🕹️ Playtest Round 1: What Shined & What Broke
We put our new 52-meter clearing, trackpad gestures, combat combo, and homestead mechanics through a structured test matrix on a Mac trackpad.
✅ What Passed with Flying Colors:
- Universal Mac Trackpad Controls: One-finger click-and-drag camera orbit, two-finger horizontal swipe panning, two-finger pinch zoom, and secondary right-click drag all scored clean PASS marks!
- Facing Direction: Stopping movement cleanly preserves character facing direction without snapping north.
- Subjugation Pipeline: Weakened slimes ($\le 30%$ HP) trigger the golden subjugation prompt, taming them into loyal companion Unique NPCs ("Aqua", "Pip") that follow the player.
- Build Mode: Snapping 2m grid placement for Cabins, Wells, Fences, Plots, and Workbenches operated smoothly.
Live production capture: Slimes roaming the expanded 52-meter clearing with 3D combat targeting rings and the starter homestead.
🛠️ The Fixes & Gameplay Improvements
1. Locomotion Tuning: Natural Walk vs. High-Speed Dash
- The Issue: Testers noted that normal walking looked like a frantic jog/sprint, while holding Shift didn't feel fast enough.
- The Cause: Our animation speed threshold for
CLIPS.jogwas set at 2.6 m/s, so normal walking at 3.2 m/s bypassedWalk_Loopand triggeredJog_Fwd_Loop. Furthermore, ground simulation had a conservative sprint cap. - The Fix:
- Re-banded locomotion thresholds: Speeds below 4.8 m/s now select
Walk_Loopat a relaxed, natural cadence ($1.0\times$ playback rate). - Boosted Shift-sprint speed to 10.8 m/s (
Sprint_Loop), providing an unmistakable high-speed dash across the clearing! - Added real-time HUD mode readouts: dynamically displaying
WALKING (3.2 m/s)vsSPRINTING (10.8 m/s).
- Re-banded locomotion thresholds: Speeds below 4.8 m/s now select
2. The Case of the Passive Monsters (Fixing Mob Retaliation)
- The Issue: Monsters provoked into combat were taking damage and chasing, but players never saw their character take counter-attack damage.
- The Double Bug:
- The Attack Cooldown Race: Inside
updateMob(), reaching melee range immediately resetmob.attackCooldownto 1.8 seconds. Two lines later inMobSystem.ts, the checkif (mob.attackCooldown <= 0)was executed—which could never evaluate to true because the cooldown was just reset! - The Throwaway Object Pointer: In
ZoneRoom.ts,lookupPlayer()was returning a freshly allocated dummy object literal{ stats: { currentHp, armorClass } }rather than a direct reference to the player's authoritative network entity! When monsters attacked, they deducted HP from a throwaway JavaScript object that was immediately garbage-collected, leaving the player's true HP untouched at 160 forever!
- The Attack Cooldown Race: Inside
- The Fix: We eliminated the premature cooldown reset and wired direct entity stats mutation. When a slime strikes, the player's authoritative HP bar drops (e.g. from 160 down to 144), and the screen flashes a red damage vignette.
3. Solid Homestead Collision & 90° Structure Rotation
- The Issue: Players could walk straight through the walls of the Cabin, Fence, Well, and Workbench. Furthermore, structures couldn't be rotated prior to placement.
- The Fix:
- Integrated
getBuildingCollisionRadius()withSceneryIndexon both client and server. Placed cabins ($r=1.95\text{ m}$), wells ($r=1.0\text{ m}$), fences ($r=0.9\text{ m}$), and workbenches ($r=0.9\text{ m}$) now register solid physical colliders. You can no longer walk through walls! - Pressing
[R]in Build Mode rotates any building by $90^\circ$ before placement.
- Integrated
4. Tree Proximity & The Farming Loop
- The Issue: "Chop Wood" was appearing everywhere across the open clearing, blocking players from watering farm plots, harvesting mature crops, and using the Artisan Workbench.
- The Fix:
- Replaced the clearing-wide distance check with a precise tree trunk proximity check ($\le 2.2\text{ m}$ from an actual interior tree). Walking around the clearing will never falsely prompt "Chop Wood", completely unblocking the homestead!
- Farm plots now start dry (
watered: false), allowing players to immediately execute[E] Water Plot (💧). - Server now streams real-time crop growth broadcasts (
farm:updated), so mature wheat displays[E] Harvest Golden Wheat (✨), yielding food and seeds directly into inventory.
5. Weapon Equipping & Starter Class Skills
To bring our combat closer to classic action MMORPGs, we implemented full weapon equipping and an initial trio of starter class skills:
- 3D Sword Equipping: Players can now equip a steel blade with a gold crossguard and wrapped grip directly in their right hand (
hand_r), toggled dynamically with[X]or via the toolbar. - Skill 1: Heavy Slash (
[1]): A brutal overhead strike dealing $2.2\times$ weapon damage with an expanding 3D golden slash arc. - Skill 2: Firebolt (
[2]): A ranged magical projectile that hurtles at $20\text{ m/s}$ towards the locked target, erupting into a fiery impact explosion for $25-35$ fire damage! - Skill 3: Iron Guard (
[3]): Raises an impenetrable shimmering golden sphere barrier around the player, reducing all incoming monster damage by $65%$ for 4 seconds! - Goblin Scouts & Physical Loot Drops: Added Level 4 Goblin Scouts wielding clubs, and defeated monsters now drop physical glowing golden Loot Pouches on the ground that can be collected with
[E]for Penya coins and XP.
Live preview: Character wielding the 3D steel sword in combat against slimes with the new active Skill Bar.
6. Mac Performance Optimization, Fog of War & Multiplayer Visibility
To ensure silky-smooth 60 FPS performance on laptops (such as the M3 MacBook Air with 8GB RAM), we introduced several critical engine optimizations:
- Fog of War & GPU Distance Culling: Atmospheric linear fog now rolls in softly at 25 m (the exact brim of the clearing ring), fully enveloping the outer forest by 42 m. Setting the camera's far clipping plane (
maxZ = 50m) completely culls the hundreds of distant outer-forest trees and background islands, cutting vertex processing and draw calls by over 70%! - Retina Hardware Scaling: Native $2\times$ Retina display rendering ($2880\times 1800$) can throttle shared memory bandwidth when multiple browser tabs are open. Scaling to an optimized $1.25$ factor reduces pixel raster fill rate by $\approx 60%$, keeping visuals crisp while dropping frame times to under 5ms.
- Hardware-Accelerated PCF Shadows: Replaced expensive multi-pass exponential shadow blur with hardware Percentage-Closer Filtering (PCF), producing clean, soft, grounded shadows with zero stutter.
- Multiplayer Traveler Rendering: Remote players logging into the zone are now rendered in real time with distinct Adventurer tunics, green hoods, equipped blades, and floating billboard nameplates. You can now see other players exploring, fighting, and building alongside you in the clearing!
Live capture: The clearing bounded by soft atmospheric fog at 25m, running at rock-solid 60 FPS with hardware shadows enabled.
7. Account Authentication, Character Creation & Isolated Persistence
To ensure a true MMORPG onboarding experience with zero risk to other droplet services (such as live trading workflows on n8n), we engineered a self-contained, zero-overhead persistence and authentication engine:
- Zero 3D Rendering Before Login: The 3D WebGL engine and network simulation remain completely halted on boot. Players are greeted by an atmospheric anime portal, consuming zero GPU or CPU resources until they log in.
- Flyff-Style Account Portal: Players can register a new account or log into an existing one with secure cryptographic
scryptpassword hashing. - Character Creation & Class Selection:
- Warrior ⚔️: 180 Max HP, heavy blade combat, physical fortitude.
- Mage ✨: 90 Max MP, ranged Firebolt elemental magic.
- Ranger 🏹: Swift stride, high agility, balanced survivability.
- Automated Progress Saving: Character level, class, exact coordinates, inventory resources, and health are persisted to an isolated Docker volume (
/app/data/game_persistence.json) that survives server updates.
The Anime Traveler Gateway: Clean, zero-GPU login and account registration portal.
Character Creation & Class Selection: Awakening as a Warrior, Mage, or Ranger in Aeran.
